26 Week Checkup

Today I had my 26.5 week checkup at the OB/GYNs. I got a lot of questions answered and even found out some new information that made my day!

The new midwife I saw today was convinced I am a perfect candidate for a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean). That was music to my ears! The hospital where I will deliver has a high success rate for VBACs and does them all the time. I was convinced the odds were against me mainly because I have an android (flat) pelvis (and that is what my previous doctor was hammering into me), but the midwife said today that women with android pelvises go through normal births all the time. So that is a relief and I am now planning to only have a c-section as an absolute last resort. The chance of my scar rupturing is less than 1%, and that is a relief as well.

The things I have going FOR me in terms of anticipating a successful VBAC are that I am healthy, tall(ish), and Luke was only 7 lbs at birth. What I need to do to prep for one is to eat healthy and not gain much weight. I have gained about 17 lbs. so far and am allowed to gain between 25 and 35 lbs total. I started a little on the thin side so that is to my advantage with this. If I can keep the baby's birth weight on the low (but not dangerous) side, it will up my chances of a successful VBAC.

I am so excited to possibly go through a VBAC experience! I was thankful to get Luke any way possible, but missing out on labor and delivery (although I know it will be very painful) was really hard to go through, especially in terms of processing what "just happened" after the birth. It can be quite confusing for the mother who suddenly has to go through a surgery and then is on major painkillers and all of a sudden...has a baby in her arms! Either way, I will just be glad when he is here.
